Get the look! Olivia Wilde's undone updo
Olivia Wilde wowed the crowds at the Oscars with this pretty, undone updo. We asked Mia Dellicompagni, Director of Hairdressing at Francesco Group, to break the look down for you.
“I love this look on Olivia; it perfectly incorporates relaxed waves into a pretty and romantic updo. As always with waves, I find that this style works best on day old hair and not freshly washed hair. Freshly washed hair is often too soft and sometimes doesn't hold a style as well as hair that has been washed the day before. If your client has freshly washed hair, try giving the hair a spritz of hairspray or dry shampoo to give it a lived-in feel before you start to style.
I’d recommend using a volumising spray at the root of the hair to create the lift that Olivia’s style has, as this style is all about the volume at the front. Spritz some volumising spray in at the roots and then ask your client to turn their head upside down so that you can blast the roots with a hair dryer. This will create volume at the roots.
Start by taking inch wide sections of hair and wrapping them around an inch wide curling wand. Make sure to curl the hair away from the face, incorporating in a fringe if the client has one. Curling the hair away from the face gives the style a modern twist. Once you've worked your way round the whole head, run your fingers through the hair to loosen the waves to add a relaxed feel to the style.
Back-comb the hair gently at the root around the front of the face before pulling the hair back into a ponytail, leaving some hair at the front free so this falls onto the face. Make sure that the parting isn't perfectly straight: Olivia’s is slightly dishevelled, which gives a relaxed feel to an otherwise glamorous style. Twist the ponytail into a chignon and pin in place. Secure the style using a strong but flexible hold hairspray.”
